The Nigeria National Association of the Deaf (NNAD) has successfully conducted an Advocacy March to the National Assembly complex as part of activities marking its National Convention on Nigerian Sign Language and Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2025.
In a statement signed by Hon. Abdullahi Isma’il Ibrahim, National Public Relations Officer (NPRO), NNAD, on behalf of the National Executives, the association said the march was organized to advocate for the passage of the Nigerian Sign Language Bill, 2025, a landmark legislation that seeks to promote inclusivity and eliminate communication barriers for deaf individuals across Nigeria.
The statement emphasized that this milestone moves the nation closer to ensuring the full recognition of sign language as a fundamental human right. The theme of the advocacy, “No Human Rights without Sign Language Rights”, served as a strong reminder of the urgent need for legislative action.
“This is a defining moment for the deaf community in Nigeria. We are optimistic that the Nigerian Sign Language Bill will be passed, and we will continue to unite our voices to ensure equal rights and opportunities for all,” the statement read.
NNAD further called on Nigerians to support the advocacy for sign language rights, stressing that collective action is key to improving the lives of deaf individuals and advancing inclusivity in society.
