Governor Yusuf Defection: Vote Based on Performance, Political Scientist and Analyst Urges Kanawa

A political scientist, analyst, and politician, Yusuf Yahaya Kumo, has urged the people of Kano State to base their voting decisions on performance rather than party loyalty, emotions, or personal allegiances, as debates continue over Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s political future.

Kumo, who is also a part-time member of the Gombe State Disability Commission, said his views are shaped by the maxism definition of politics, combined with elements of Machiavellian realism, stressing that politics should be approached with logic, and critical assessment rather than sentiment.

He challenged Kano voters to reflect on political history by asking who facilitated the emergence of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and who similarly brought Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to power, noting that political sponsorship alone should not determine public judgment.

According to him, the more important task is to objectively compare the performance of both administrations, especially within their first four years in office, instead of focusing on personalities or political alignments.

He emphasized that such an assessment should focus on key sectors including education, healthcare, employment, youth empowerment, and poverty reduction, which directly affect the lives of ordinary citizens.

Kumo argued that if Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is found to have performed better than his predecessor in these critical areas, voters should set aside party affiliation and emotional attachment and vote strictly on performance.

He referenced established political thought, noting that politics is fundamentally about who gets what, when, and how, and urged voters to examine what has happened to poverty, unemployment, and inequality under the current administration.

The analyst maintained that measurable progress in reducing poverty, tackling unemployment, addressing inequality, fighting corruption, and strengthening democratic governance should be the main criteria for judging the governor’s leadership.

He also warned against personalizing politics, stating that all political actors pursue their own interests, while the responsibility of voters is to protect their interests and collective future of Kano State rather than individual or party interests.

Kumo concluded by calling on Kanawa to remain rational and accountable in their political choices, stressing that leaders should only be voted out for failure to deliver on governance promises, not merely because of political realignments or defections.
