BREAKING : NCPWD Invites Enugu Psychiatric Institution for Investigation Over Alleged Disability Discrimination

The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities NCPWD has commenced formal investigative action over an alleged case of discrimination against a person with disability in line with the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities Prohibition Act 2018.


In an official invitation letter dated January 6 2026 and signed by the Executive Secretary of the Commission Hon Ayuba Burki Gufwan the Chief Medical Director of the Federal Neuropsychiatric School of Post Basic Mental Health Nursing New Haven Enugu was invited to appear before the Commission.



The invitation is in connection with an alleged discriminatory conduct involving Ms Uche Olivia a person with disability who is visually impaired.


According to the letter the investigative action is being carried out pursuant to Section 1 of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities Prohibition Act 2018 which empowers the Commission to promote protect and enforce the rights of persons with disabilities in Nigeria.


The Commission directed the institution to report to Room 407 Fourth Floor at the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities headquarters on January 29 2026 for an investigative meeting opened by the Commission.


The letter further warned that the invitation was issued under the authority of the law and that noncompliance would attract severe sanctions as provided by the Act.


The move marks one of the latest steps by the Commission under Hon Ayuba Burki Gufwan to enforce accountability and ensure that discrimination against persons with disabilities is addressed through lawful investigation and prosecution where necessary.


Stakeholders have described the action as a strong signal that disability rights laws are no longer symbolic but actively enforced.
