SAVWIN Establishes Grassroots Network of Women and Girls with Disabilities in Maiduguri to Strengthen Climate Action and Advocacy

Maiduguri, Borno State — The Sound Abilities for Vulnerable Women Initiative (SAVWIN), under the leadership of Executive Director Miyausa Wayuta Mshelia, has inaugurated a Grassroots Network of Women and Girls with Disabilities in Maiduguri to advance climate action, inclusion, and advocacy. The group officially bears the name "Borno Inclusive Climate Change Advocates".

In a statement signed by SAVWIN’s Executive Director, Miyausa Wayuta Mshelia, the organization emphasized: “Climate change does not discriminate, but its impacts hit women and girls with disabilities the hardest. This network will serve as their collective voice, ensuring that no woman or girl is left behind in climate action and policy engagement.”

The one-day program, held on September 2, 2025 at Mashidi mami community hall, Maiduguri, was a follow-up to the capacity-building workshop earlier conducted in April 2025. It sought to provide a platform for women and girls with disabilities to share experiences, strengthen leadership skills, and demand their rights in decision-making processes—particularly in the face of challenges worsened by climate change.

The facilitator, Project Officer Obadiah Zaggi, further noted: “Inclusion is not charity, it is a right. By forming this network, we are empowering women with disabilities to take their rightful place in leadership and advocacy.”

One of the newly inaugurated leaders, Hassana Mohammed Bunu, expressed optimism, saying: “This opportunity means so much to us. We are ready to raise our voices, work together, and ensure that women and girls with disabilities are recognized as active contributors to development, not passive beneficiaries.”

The event also featured the election of an executive committee to coordinate the activities of the newly formed network. Members elected include:

  • Chairperson: Executive Director, SAVWIN
  • Assistant Chairperson: Hassana Mohammed Bunu
  • Secretary: Hauwa Abdul Karim
  • Assistant Secretary: Fatima Yunus Jibrin
  • Treasurer: Yakaka Kelli Kachalla
  • Financial Secretary: Amina Abdullahi
  • Public Relations Officer: Falmata Muktari
  • Welfare Officers: Rose Adaviriku and Fatima Mohammed Mustapha

The committee was charged to work without discrimination and to champion inclusivity across communities in Borno State.

The program concluded with appreciation remarks from volunteers and active contributions from the 28 participants in attendance.
