GOVERNOR OTTI APPROVES FACILITY FOR SOUTHEAST ZONAL OFFICE OF NATIONAL COMMISSION FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

In a statement issued on January 16, 2025, by Ctz. Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Abia State, Governor Alex Otti approved the establishment of a Southeast Zonal Office for the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD).

The announcement followed a visit by the Executive Secretary of NCPWD, Hon. Ayuba Gufwan, who described Governor Otti as a "champion of the disabilities community in Nigeria."

Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, Hon. Gufwan expressed gratitude for the Governor's inclusive leadership and his establishment of the Abia State Commission for Persons with Disabilities.
"We are deeply appreciative that, upon assuming office, you created the state equivalent of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities," Gufwan said. "On behalf of 35 million Nigerians with disabilities, we thank you for your support."

Hon. Gufwan further explained that the choice of Abia State for the zonal office was due to its hospitality and accessibility, which he described as unmatched in the Southeast region.

In his response, Governor Otti reaffirmed his administration's commitment to non-discrimination and inclusivity. "Our government does not discriminate based on disability, gender, religion, or ethnicity. We are focused on meritocracy and fairness," the Governor stated.

On the spot, Governor Otti approved the request and directed his Special Assistant on Persons with Disabilities, the Director General of Umuahia Capital Development Authority, and the Commissioner for Lands and Housing to identify a suitable location for the office.

"I assure you that within two or three months, your office will be ready, and Hon. Ayuba Gufwan will be invited back for the handover of the Southeast Zonal Office," the Governor said.
