Sound Abilities For Vulnerable Women Initiative Nigeria, SAVWIN, led by it's Executive Director, Miyausa Wayuta Mshelia with support from the Disability Rights Fund, DRF, has officially launched the Borno State Platform on Disability Inclusive Climate Governance
The milestone event was held in MMC, Borno State, under the project “Advancing Gender and Disability Justice in Climate Action Governance and Economic Resilience for Women with Disabilities.”
WHAT HAPPENED:
The launch brought together government MDAs, CSOs, OPDs, and development partners to create a coordinated structure that ensures women with disabilities meaningfully participate in climate decision-making.
Activities included:
1. Interactive presentations on disability-inclusive climate governance
2. Technical sessions and experience sharing by women with disabilities
3. Group discussions to identify barriers and opportunities
4. Formal unveiling of the State Platform by government representatives
WHY IT MATTERS
Climate change disproportionately affects vulnerable groups. Women with disabilities have long been excluded from climate policies. This platform gives them, for the first time in Borno, a structured voice to influence climate policies, budgets, and programs.
KEY OUTCOMES
- 16 participants – 8 Females, 8 Males, including 11 PWDs
- Successful launch of the Borno State Platform on Disability Inclusive Climate Governance
- Commitments secured from Ministry of Water Resources, Ministry of Environment, SEMA, and OPDs to support inclusive climate action
- Strengthened multi-stakeholder collaboration and a framework for advocacy and accountability
SUCCESS STORY
The formal declaration and unveiling by government representatives signaled strong political will. Stakeholders publicly pledged to ensure climate interventions are inclusive, accessible, and responsive to women with disabilities.
CHALLENGES & MITIGATION
Challenges included limited prior awareness, accessibility gaps, and coordination among diverse stakeholders.
SAVWIN addressed these through capacity-building sessions, inclusive communication, and establishing the platform for long-term coordination.

- Formalize the structure of the State Platform – July 2026
- Develop advocacy strategy and conduct capacity building – July–August 2026
- Establish coordination channels and engage MDAs for policy integration – Ongoing
- Produce policy briefs and expand community-level awareness
