The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, Hon. Mohammed Abba Isa, has received the prestigious Award of Excellence as the Icon of Societal Development of the Year. The National Association of Northern Nigerian Students (NANNS) presented the award during a ceremony in his Abuja office, recognizing his commitment to peacebuilding, education, and philanthropy.
Speaking at the event, Bashir Nasir, General Secretary of NANNS, commended Hon. Abba Isa’s initiatives in addressing critical societal challenges, including unemployment, marginalization, and drug abuse. He emphasized that the association’s focus on unity and education aligns with Hon. Abba Isa’s efforts.
Nasir highlighted the alarming issue of over 20 million out-of-school children in Nigeria, 65% of whom are from the northern region, including many with special needs. He acknowledged Hon. Abba Isa’s significant impact in tackling these challenges and expressed NANNS' gratitude.
Particular praise was given to the Beyond Disability Project, an initiative led by Hon. Abba Isa, which has empowered persons with disabilities (PWDs) across Nigeria. Describing it as a beacon of hope, Nasir said the project fosters inclusion and provides opportunities for marginalized groups.
In his acceptance speech, Hon. Mohammed Abba Isa expressed gratitude to NANNS, noting their shared commitment to societal development. He emphasized that the efforts of his office align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on uplifting marginalized communities.
Hon. Abba Isa highlighted the importance of unity, peace, and progress, noting that these are essential for achieving meaningful development. He reaffirmed his commitment to working collaboratively to address the needs of the most vulnerable groups in society.
