The Gombe State Disability Bill has reached a significant milestone, successfully passing its third reading in the Gombe State House of Assembly. The bill now awaits the assent of Governor Alhaji Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, further demonstrating his commitment to empowering persons with disabilities.
This development was announced in a press statement signed by the state chairman of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), Gombe State chapter, Ishiyaku Adamu. "We commend Governor Yahaya, Speaker Hon. Abubakar Muhammed Luggerewo, and bill sponsor Hon. Shuaibu Adamu (representing Kwami East in the state House of Assembly) for their tireless efforts. Their dedication will soon enable individuals with disabilities in Gombe State to enjoy enhanced protections and opportunities."
Key Provisions of the Bill:
1. Establishment of the Gombe State Disability Commission
2. Protection of rights and access to education, healthcare, and public buildings
3. Promotion of inclusivity and social justice
Governor Yahaya's commitment to the disability community has been evident through past actions, including a 2019 meeting with the Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities (JONAPWD) and a 2023 press statement reaffirming his support. Gombe State is now positioned to join eighteen other states that have enacted similar legislation, promoting disability rights.
The disability community eagerly anticipates Governor Yahaya's assent, marking a significant victory in the ongoing fight for inclusivity and equality.
