The Technical Assistant on Communication, Office Of The Senior Special Assistant To the President of Nigeria on Students Engagement and a vocal youth Advocate Amb. Timothy Nwachukwu, has called on Nigerian federal lawmakers and State Governors to engage in constructive dialogue with the burgeoning youth population currently expressing their grievances through protests.
In a press statement made available to newsmen in Abuja, Amb Timothy Nwachukwu emphasized the importance of having a town hall engagement with the protesting youths to address their grievances as the leaders and representatives of the people.
He argued that the State Governors and federal lawmakers needs to organise town hall meetings for young people to voice their concerns and participate in decision making processes.
“The lack of accessibility of some Federal Lawmakers by the youths who defied all odds to elect them into the National Assembly has increased the frustration of the youths who felt used and abandoned” Amb. Nwachukwu stated.
“Its time for the lawmakers to listen to the aspirations of the youths in their various constituency and work together to build a better Nigeria.”
Nwachukwu highlighted issues such as unemployment, insecurity, poor education, and corruption as major drivers of youth discontent. He urged lawmakers to prioritize legislation that addresses these challenges and creates opportunities for young people.
Amb. Nwachukwu also called on State Governors to invest in youth development programs, including skills training, entrepreneurship support, and mentorship. He stressed the need for a comprehensive approach that empowers young people to become active and responsible citizens.
He regretted that some states are hoarding the palliatives provided by the federal government. He called on the
State Governors to ensure prompt distribution of the various palliatives donated to them by the Federal Government and further urged them to judiciously maximise the resources at their disposal for the benefits and welfare of their citizens as the removal of subsidy resulted to increased
federal allocations to the States and local government.
The recent wave of protests across the country haought to the fore the frustrations and demands of Nigeria’s youth. Many young people have taken to the streets to express their anger over the perceived failure of the government to address their needs.
