BREAKING NEWS: Deaf Students Break Barriers in Tech as TIDI Launches Bold Inclusion Drive in Kaduna and Nasarawa

By Yusuf Yahaya Kumo - June 24, 2025

In a powerful move to bridge the digital divide, the Tech Inclusion for the Deaf Initiative (TIDI) has trained 56 Deaf students in Kaduna on tech careers, mentorship, and digital empowerment.

The program, which took place on June 21, 2025, at the Kaduna State Special Education School, was themed “Tech Careers and Mentorship for Deaf Secondary School Students”. It featured an intensive mentorship model led by six accomplished Deaf mentors who rotated between groups to maximize student engagement and learning.

A vibrant panel session was the highlight of the day, with students confidently engaging their mentors on career opportunities, challenges, and personal growth in the tech space. The event not only provided practical insight but also boosted self-belief among participants, with TIDI reaffirming its commitment to building an inclusive digital future.

“At TIDI, we believe tech is for everyone. This initiative is about more than skills — it’s about representation, access, and hope,” said Victor Oricha, Program Manager of TIDI.

TIDI is also making waves in Nasarawa State, where it has partnered with the Nasarawa State Disability Rights Commission (NSDRC) to train Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) on essential computer skills for job readiness and economic empowerment.

During a visit to the NSDRC headquarters in Lafia, Victor Oricha commended Governor Abdullahi Sule for appointing Mr. Saleh Barde Keana, a person with a disability, as the pioneer Executive Chairman of the commission.

Chairman Keana expressed strong support for the partnership, emphasizing that technology is a critical tool for disability inclusion. He confirmed plans to co-develop a robust training curriculum and outreach strategy with TIDI, aiming to uplift the lives of countless PWDs across the state.

“This is more than a partnership — it’s a step towards transforming the socio-economic future of people with disabilities in Nasarawa,” he noted.
