The Executive Governor of Gombe state, Alh Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has commenced his administration’s ever ready posture towards making life more meaningful and better for persons with disabilities in Gombe state.
This was disclosed by the Hon. Speaker, Gombe State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Abubakar Mohammed Luggerewo, during a public hearing for an act to establish the long awaited Disability Commission and Gombe State Social Investment Agency convened by the honourable members of Gombe State House of Assembly at the assembly complex hall on Monday.
INN reports that the public hearing conducted by the lawmakers was to deliberate on two separate bills, the Gombe State Social Investment Programme Agency Bill and the Gombe State Disability Commission Bill.
The Gombe State Disability Commission if established will play a pivotal role in seeing to the full integration of PWDs in Gombe state and beyond, advocating for and protecting the rights of persons with disabilities in the society as well as promoting their full inclusion in the scheme of things in all aspects of public life.
The commission will be responsible for implementing policies and programmes that will facilitate accessibility, inclusivity, and equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities in Gombe state, further to that, the proposed Disability Commission when established will ensure all forms of discriminations, stigmatisation, myths and superstitious beliefs about PWDs in Gombe state are eliminated and terminated, this will enable persons with special needs to enjoy unlimited access to education, healthcare, employment opportunities and empowerment like any other citizen of Gombe state.
Speaking during the public hearing, the Speaker of the Gombe State House of Assembly, Rt.Hon. Abubakar Mohammed Luggerewo, noted that the twin bills was a part of several bills debated by the lawmakers and submitted to His Excellency for assent, noting that the Governor was very reassuring on his readiness to assent to the Disability Commission bill and ensure its timely passage into law.
Luggarewo who expressed immense commendations on Governor Yahaya for promptly sending in the Gombe State Social Investment Programme Agency and Gombe state Disability Commission bills also heaped praises on honourable member of the house, Hon. Shu’aibu Adamu Haruna for sponsoring the private-member bill for the Gombe State Disability Commission, assuring their speedy passage for assent by the Governor.
Responding on behalf of the entire PWDs community of Gombe state, the Chairman of Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), Gombe state chapter, Mal Ishyaku Adamu commended governor Yahaya for his continued support to PWDs in the state.
Adamu stated, “the entire persons with disabilities in Gombe state will forever remain indebted to Governor Yahaya for being the only governor in the history of Gombe state who has the interest of persons with disabilities at heart.
“We commend His Excellency for initiating countless PWDs-oriented policies in the past five years that added value to the lives of persons with disabilities in Gombe state in a number of respect. Indeed the establishment of the Gombe State Disability Commission will go a long way in transforming not only the lives of persons with disabilities, but also their, families, relatives, siblings and indeed every citizen of Gombe state will reap the benefit of this commission once it is established” Adamu said
On his part chairman of House Committee on Women Affairs and Special Duties, Hon. Gabriel Galadima Fushison, commended his fellow lawmakers and other stakeholders in the state for supporting the process in one way or the other, promising that his committee will leave no stone unturned to ensure the two bills receive the necessary approvals to pave the way for the establishments of Gombe State Social Investment Programme Agency and Gombe State Disability Commission.
