National Assembly to ensure strengthening of disability law

The National Assembly says it will strengthen laws on discrimination against persons with disability in the country.


The Chairman, House of Representatives committee on Disability Dr. Bashir Daudu, gave the assurance at a two day national convening of stakeholders on Disability matters held in Abuja.

Dr. Daudu, also emphasised the need for every Ministry, Department and Agencies of government to ensure that disability communities enjoy adequate access to all public buildings and structures.



The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities Comrade Abba Isa, stated that the present administration has placed priority on issues of disability inclusion in every sector of the country.




The Executive Secretary National Commission for Persons With Disability, Dr. James Lalu, who gave an update on the Commission’s intervention into alleged discrimination against PWDs in various places, said steps are on to prosecute and sanction offenders in line with the law, assured that the commission has Declared Zero Tolerance for Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities



Also, the Senior programme Officer, Ford Foundation Mr. Debesaki Mac-Ikemenjima expressed worry over the poor implementation of disability rights by governments at all levels.


The representative of the Foreign Commonwealth Development Office, Onyinye Atuanya expressed readiness of the British government to support inclusion of Person with disability, in all areas of socio-economic development of Nigeria.


The event, themed “Evaluating the Implementation of the Disability Act in Nigeria,” considered pathways to enhancing disability rights in the country.
