The Management of Gombe State Transport Services (Gombe Line) has debunked reports circulating on social media that its bus was attacked by armed bandits between Ayere and Kabba this morning with all passengers kidnapped.
In a press statement issued by the Director General, Dr Sani Sabo, the transport company described the report as "false and unfounded".
"The Management of Gombe State Transport Services (Gombe Line) wishes to categorically refute the false report circulating that a Gombe Line bus was attacked by armed bandits between Ayere and Kabba this morning, with all passengers allegedly kidnapped. For the avoidance of doubt, no such incident has been reported involving any vehicle in our fleet," the statement said.
The management urged members of the public to disregard the rumour and refrain from sharing unverified information.
Background: An earlier viral post by #eyeofabuja had claimed: _"BREAKING: Armed bandits attacked a Gombe line bus this morning between Ayere and Kabba kidnapped all passengers on board."_ - which Gombe Line now says is fake.
Meanwhile, in an exclusive chat with Inclusive Reporters,an eyewitness who is among the co-travellers on that route and who preferred anonymity, he said they boarded a Gombe City Transport vehicle, but the bus that was attacked was a Jos-bound vehicle and not a Gombe Line bus.
According to him, their Gombe City Transport vehicle developed a faulty tyre and had to stop for several hours to fix it. After fixing the tyre, they continued their journey and later met their fellow travellers on the way, including the driver of the bus that was attacked.
"Had it been our tyre had not gone bad, we would have been the first to be attacked and kidnapped," he added.
The company reassured passengers of its commitment to providing safe and reliable transport services.
