SAVWIN Launches Grassroots Climate Action Group for Women and Girls with Disabilities in Biu LGA, Borno State.

Biu, Borno State – The Sound Abilities for Vulnerable Women Initiative (SAVWIN) has successfully organized a groundbreaking program in Biu Local Government Area, aimed at equipping women and girls with disabilities with advocacy skills and formally establishing a Grassroots Climate Action Group named "Inclusive Climate Change Advocates"

The event held on Monday 11th August 2025 gathered 29 participants from across the LGA.

In a welcome address delivered by Mr. Samuel Bassi on behalf of the Executive Director, Miyausa Wayuta Mshelia, who reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to advancing the rights, inclusion, and empowerment of women and girls with disabilities.

In a statement signed by Miyausa Wayuta Mshelia, Executive Director of SAVWIN, she explained: “The aim of this program is to build on the knowledge gained during the capacity-building workshop we held in May and to create a united platform where women with disabilities can speak with one voice in their communities. Advocacy is about speaking up, raising awareness, and influencing change, and today we are ensuring that women and girls with disabilities are equipped to do just that.”

Participants benefited from an in-depth training session on advocacy and leadership, covering types of advocacy—self-advocacy, individual advocacy, and systems advocacy. Mshelia added: “When women and girls with disabilities are empowered to advocate, they are not only speaking for themselves but also for others who may not have the opportunity. This is how we create lasting change.”

The program concluded with the formation of the Biu Women with Disabilities Network under the name "Inclusive Climate Change Advocates" inaugurated with selected executives. The network is committed to driving grassroots advocacy on climate change, promoting disability rights, and improving the welfare of women, children, and the aged in the community.

Expressing appreciation, Mshelia said: “We are deeply grateful to the participants, facilitators, and local stakeholders who made this program possible. Together, we are building a stronger, more inclusive society where no voice is left behind.”
