Gombe, Nigeria – In a significant move toward inclusive growth and empowerment, the Gombe State Commission for Persons with Disabilities, led by Dr. Adamu Ishaq, has initiated strengthened collaboration with the North-East Development Commission (NEDC) through a courtesy visit to Mr. Rufai Lawan Babamanu, the NEDC State Coordinator for Gombe.

Held in Gombe on Tuesday, August 1, 2025, the visit focused on exploring joint strategies to enhance service delivery and support for persons with disabilities across the state, particularly in the areas of health, education, and inclusive infrastructure.

“We are here to build on the success of past interventions and to align more closely with the NEDC’s mandate of equitable development in the region,” said Dr. Ishaq. He commended the commission’s recent medical outreach in underserved communities, highlighting the Center for Special Education—Gombe’s only school dedicated to children with disabilities—as a key beneficiary.

Describing the center as a “nurturing ground for future advocates and leaders,” Dr. Ishaq emphasized its critical role in the Commission’s strategy for sustainable inclusion and capacity-building.

NEDC Pledges Continued Support

In response, Mr. Rufai Lawan Babamanu reaffirmed the commission’s appreciation for NEDC’s collaboration and pledged ongoing institutional backing.

“Our commitment to inclusive development remains unwavering. We welcome meaningful engagement with the Commission to mainstream disability concerns across all NEDC projects,” he said, underscoring the need for collaborative planning and robust policy integration.

Aligning Disability and Development Agendas

Key priorities for the partnership are expected to include:

  • Integrating accessibility standards into infrastructure and public spaces
  • Supporting inclusive vocational training and livelihood programs
  • Ensuring access to assistive devices and inclusive educational tools

This collaboration is poised to set a model for inter-agency engagement in the Northeast, broadening the reach and impact of disability-inclusive development programs.
