15th October,2021.
The country manager of ASKY AIRLINE Abuja has formally apologized to one, Ms Blessing Mary Ocheido, a woman with Disability for the discriminatory attitude of it's staff which led to damage of her motorized wheelchair during one of her flight to Abidjan Ivory coast to Abuja Nigeria, IR learnt.
Inclusivereporters futher learnt that the Airline also paid her monetary compensation for the damages and this is done after a legal battle in court filled and represented by her lawyer Mr Baba Isa, Esq., the Principal Counsel and Head of Chambers of First Baba Isa (FBI) LEGAL, an Abuja based law firm.
Below is a full statement of her lawyer and letter of apology from the Airline attached.
"In January, 2020 we filed a suit against Asky Airlines at the Federal High Court, Abuja, on behalf of Blessing Mary Ocheido , whose wheel chair control handle was damaged when she boarded the said airline.
When news of this got to me, I took up the case pro bono. I did this not just because they damaged her wheel chair but how staff of the airline went ahead to treat her very shabbily. It was this treatment, more than anything else, that made Blessing took up the fight to them.
Blessing is not just a person living with disabilities, but one who has also dedicated her life to fighting for better treatment for persons living with disabilities. She believed that if she didn't fight this, it will be the same treatment that might be meted out to others. She is an Amazon, a warrior; and the best we could do was to lend ourselves to her tenacity.
Now, it has ended well. Consent judgment has been obtain in good terms. Asky has apologised and paid a good monetary compensation in dollars into her domiciliary account. All parties, including Asky, consider this a win-win.
For me, this is why I'm a lawyer. The courtroom is my laboratory where I go daily to try, a bit, to change my world. So, help me God.
