World Bank-SURWASH Delegation Visits Emir of Gombe, Seeks Deeper Cultural Insight

Gombe, Nigeria — In a bid to foster community engagement and deepen their understanding of local culture, a delegation from the Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (SURWASH) project in Gombe State, paid a courtesy visit to the Emir of Gombe, His Royal Highness Dr. Abubakar Shehu Abubakar III, at his palace on Friday.


The delegation was led by the SURWASH Gombe State Program Coordinator, Engr Usman A.Aliyu, MNSE and Dr. Blossom Chukwusom Chukwunwike, PhD, ACA, MNIM, MIIA, a Financial Specialist from the World Bank who was visiting Gombe for the first time.


The visit aimed to familiarize Dr. Chukwunwike with the people, culture, and traditions of Gombe State, as well as to strengthen ties between the SURWASH team and traditional institutions.


Accompanied by members of the Gombe State Project Implementation Unit (SPIU) and other SURWASH staff, the delegation highlighted the importance of traditional leadership in the successful implementation of water and sanitation programs across communities.


The Emir of Gombe warmly received the team, reaffirming the traditional council’s support for developmental initiatives that improve the lives of citizens and align with public health goals.


“We welcome partnerships that prioritize clean water, hygiene, and development,” the Emir said, urging continued collaboration with local stakeholders to ensure the success of the SURWASH project.
