CDPF Youth Representative Urges Commonwealth Countries to adopt Commonwealth Disability Inclusion Action Plan


Mr. Kihembo Wilbert, Youth Representative of the Commonwealth Disabled People Forum, urges Commonwealth countries to adopt the Commonwealth Disability Inclusion Action Plan ahead of the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa.


 The plan aims to ensure the full inclusion, protection, and equal rights of persons with disabilities across the Commonwealth.


Inclusive Reporters learnt that key aspects of the Commonwealth Disability Inclusion Action Plan include:


1. Recognition and Inclusion: Acknowledging the importance of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and the Sustainable Development Goals in supporting the rights of persons with disabilities.


2. General Principles: Emphasizing dignity, non-discrimination, equality, accessibility, and respect for children with disabilities.


3. Commitments and Actions: Focusing on non-discrimination, removing barriers, ensuring participation in policy-making, promoting equal employment opportunities, and implementing the plan through legislation and capacity building.


4. Implementation and Monitoring: Establishing systems for tracking progress, sharing best practices, and supporting UNCRPD reporting.


5. Emergency Situations and Risk Reduction: Including persons with disabilities in emergency planning and risk reduction efforts.


6. Capacity Building and Cooperation: Strengthening understanding of Disability Equality and fostering cooperation among Commonwealth countries for consistent implementation.
