Taraba Deaf Women Celebrates International Day of PWDs, Narrates Challenges..

 Tarab state deaf women association on 3rd  December, 2023 celebrates International Day of Persons with Disabilities at Jalingo Taraba state capital

Hannatu simon in a statement sent to inclusive reporters narrates different challenges faced by Deaf women and PWDs in general in the state while pleading the government to provide sign language interpreters free of charges for their members, empower and include it's members in the government empowerment, policy and programmes. 

"Many of us we r not been recognized by government and any organization.
We were Left out in area of employment, empowerment, health care etc. as a result of lack of sign language interpreter who would get us understand information and communication at hospitals, the rate of death is mostly face by deaf women because of  communication challenges, some couldn't even go to the hospital.


Lack of access to health care and educational facilities and services especially by persons with deafness due to lack of sign language interpreters in hospitals, higher tertiary institutions, exclusion from political and electoral process by political parties political office holders, sexual and gender based violence, discrimination in area of employment due to deafness or disability etc. 

"In time of employment by the government it is unfortunate many PWDs especially the Deaf are left behind. 

She reiterated that many Deaf women are educated, with good quality education and certificates but sadly left unemployed. 

I'm using this opportunity on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities to Plead the government and authorities concerned to please provide sign language interpreters, include  deaf women in their empowerment, employment and everything the government and political office holders are  doing.  

Inclusive reporters reports that the annual observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities was proclaimed in 1992, by the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 47/3.

The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of Persons with Disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of Persons living with disabilities in every aspects of political, social, economic and cultural life.

This year's theme, 'United in action to rescue and achieve the sustainable development goals for, with and by persons with disabilities,'
