8th March is widely celebrated annually as
International Day for Women.
This day is one of the most important days of the year to celebrate women.
In a statement by the chairperson, Taraba State Deaf Women Association Ms Hannatu Simon and made available to Inclusive Reporter, "It’s a day we raise awareness about women's equality, lobby for accelerated gender parity, and to seek for support from the government and other stakeholders".
"Despite the little attention given to women with deafness, we can say that women with deafness have contributed to the development of the country due to their hard work and determination".
All over Nigeria we have professional deaf women as doctors, pharmacist, lawyers, counsellors, lecturers, chefs, farmers, teachers, entrepreneurs etc. These women have gone on to place their footprints where other non-disabled have despite their disabilities. They have gone on to contribute to the development of their families, communities and country at large.
It is in light of this, the Taraba State Deaf Women Association's Chairperson, requests Taraba State Governor, his commissioners and other high Officers of Taraba State to consider Taraba Deaf Women in their agenda, include them in all their doing, carry them along, give them chance to contribute their quota to the development of Taraba State because according to her, "we are well able".
"We call on the government to grand special scholarship to women with disabilities so as to enable them further their studies, We request for jobs for women with disabilities who graduated but are still not working, we request special for empowerment programs of deaf women with business tools, startup capital to boost their businesses, many times such program are done but women with deafness are often left out" She lamented
The theme for the 2024 celebration is ‘’COUNT HER IN: INVEST IN WOMEN. ACCELERATE PROGRESS.
